If the thought of visiting the dentist makes your palms sweat, you’re not alone. Nearly 36% of Americans experience dental anxiety, and about 12% have extreme dental fear. That’s why sedation dentistry exists: to help you get the care you need without the stress.

At Rock Ridge Dental Esthetics, we understand that feeling nervous is perfectly normal. Dr. Louk and our team are here to make your visit as calm and comfortable as possible. But knowing how to prepare for sedation can make a huge difference in how smoothly your appointment goes. Here’s what you need to know.

How to Prepare for Sedation Dentistry in Round Rock, TX

Be Honest About Your Health History

Before your appointment, we’ll review your medical history and current medications. This isn’t just paperwork, it’s a critical safety step.

Tell us about any medical conditions you have, even if they seem unrelated to your teeth. If you have sleep apnea, high blood pressure, or any other chronic condition, we need to know. Patients with significant medical considerations may need to check with their primary care physician before sedation.

Also, share a complete list of medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Some medications, like blood thinners, may need to be adjusted before your appointment.

Follow Fasting Instructions Carefully

For oral or IV sedation, you’ll typically need to avoid eating for about 8 hours before your appointment. You may be able to drink clear liquids like water up to 2 hours before, but always follow the specific instructions we give you.

Why does this matter? An empty stomach reduces the risk of nausea and other complications during sedation. If you’re scheduled for nitrous oxide (laughing gas), fasting requirements are usually less strict, but we’ll give you clear guidelines during your consultation.

Plan Your Ride Home

This one’s non-negotiable: after oral or IV sedation, you cannot drive yourself home. The medications take several hours to fully wear off, and you’ll be drowsy.

Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment. They should also plan to stay with you for a few hours afterward, just to make sure you’re recovering well.

For nitrous oxide, the effects wear off within minutes of removing the mask, so you can usually drive yourself.

Dress Comfortably

This might sound like a small thing, but it matters. Wear loose, comfortable clothing with short sleeves if possible. This gives us easy access for placing an IV line if needed. Also, leave jewelry, contact lenses, and heavy makeup at home.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Once you arrive, we’ll get you settled and comfortable. If you’re having IV sedation, we’ll place a small IV line in your arm; the medication works quickly, and most patients feel relaxed within seconds.

Throughout your procedure, our team monitors your vital signs continuously, including your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels. Safety is always our top priority.

When your treatment is complete, you’ll rest in our recovery area until we’re confident you’re ready to go home. We’ll give you written post-operative instructions to follow, and your driver can take you home to rest.
